This story is #7 in our Soar Into Summer reading program. "Teammates" is a unique selection for our summer reading book list. At first glance, this book may seem geared toward an older reader, but I think the subject matter can be shared with children of all ages, even if some of the vocabulary is unfamiliar.

The story is about how Jackie Robinson became the first black baseball player to play for the Major Leagues during an era of racism and discrimination. Robinsons teammate, Pee Wee Reese, stood by him and stood up for him despite the hatred and threats. This small gesture actually made a huge difference and was symbolic of the social changes to come. At its core, that is what this book is about: doing the right thing, no matter how small, can make a significant and positive impact on the world.

Teammates was written by Peter Golenbock and illustrated by Paul Bacon.

Reading aloud is an important thing we can do to motivate and inspire young children to fall in love with reading - and literacy is one of the most important skills we can teach them. It is my sincere hope that these videos I am sharing with you serve as a tool to help you achieve this goal. As a mom, reading is a priority for my family. I am very passionate about the importance of literacy. Did you know that 25 million children in the US cannot read proficiently? I have always loved reading books and I work hard to nurture that same love in young children. By sharing stories aloud I hope your kids will be encouraged to read more books and become little bookworms as they grow up!
