When we read, sometimes we are reading a story from different perspectives. It could be from the view of the main character or watching the book characters as if we were watching a movie! To help you understand point of view in reading, here are some age-appropriate reading activities for grades 3–6.

(Activities for Grades 3 & 4)

Think about the book you are reading. Is the story told from the first-person point of view or the third-person point of view? Look for a short passage in the book that demonstrates the point of view. Copy the passage onto a piece of paper and draw an illustration to go with it.

(Activities for Grades 5 & 6)

On a piece of paper, write the definition of first-person point of view and third-person point of view (these can be found in the video). Now, take some time to identify the point of view in the book you are reading. Look at the book and do some investigating, using what you learned in the video. Lastly, write a paragraph in which you identify and describe the point of view in your book, using at least one direct quote. Read it aloud to a family member or friend.
