After the assassination of his great uncle, Julius Caesar, in 44 BC, Augustus hunts down the murderers and defeats the armies of his enemies. Rising quickly to power, he becomes Romes first emperor, beginning a period of peace and prosperity known as the Pax Romana, or Roman Peace.
