Being MEAN means treating someone in an unkind way on purpose - with the plan of upsetting them or making them feel or uncomfortable.

When your friend wants to do something different than what you want to do, it doesn’t mean they are trying to upset you. They are not being mean.

Mrs. Weller teaches a lesson on social misperception and how to be flexible when things dont go your way.

The lesson about misperceiving social intent and understanding the difference between meanness and misperception aligns with several competencies from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework.

Self-awareness: Understanding ones own emotions and thoughts, as well as their impact on others, is an important aspect of self-awareness. By teaching children about misperceiving social intent, you are helping them to better understand their own emotional reactions and how their thoughts and feelings can influence their perceptions of others.

Social awareness: Social awareness involves understanding and empathy for others, and recognizing the perspectives and feelings of others. By encouraging children to see things from the perspective of others, you are helping them to develop their social awareness and empathy skills.

Relationship skills: Good relationship skills are crucial for building and maintaining positive social relationships. The post encourages children to communicate openly and honestly with others, which is a key aspect of developing good relationship skills.

Responsible decision making: Making responsible decisions involves considering the impact of ones actions on oneself and others. By helping children to understand that not all actions or words are intended to be mean, you are encouraging them to make more responsible decisions in their relationships with others.
